What is Domestic Wastewater?
Domestic wastewater is made up of foul and grey waste. Untreated, it is classed as highly polluting hazardous waste that can pose significant health and safety risks if not managed correctly.
The Klargester BioDisc processes this waste to create an effluent which is then passed into a drainage field. Due to the high quality effluent it can also be discharged into rivers or water courses.
No Smell: BioDiscs Produce Odourless Effluent
The quality and cleanliness of wastewater is typically measured by factors such as its biological and chemical oxygen demand (BOD and COD) which measures its dissolved organic matter, as well as the amount of suspended solid waste and ammonium nitrate it contains.
So what causes wastewater effluent to smell? There are two factors at play here.
Firstly, any smell is typically caused by the ammonium nitrate content in the wastewater.
The Klargester BioDisc removes almost all the ammonia along with organic matter and suspended solids during the treatment process.
Secondly, the Klargester BioDisc is one of the few systems in the UK that doesn’t use an air pump (used in an ‘aerated’ system). This means very little odour will be released into the air. This has been independently verified through odour sampling reports (available on request). Instead of aeration, the BioDisc relies on its patented four-stage process, including settlement tanks and biological treatments, which clean the wastewater before discharging it.
Low Noise
The Klargester BioDisc is also one of the quietest sewage treatment plants on the market. The noise it makes is equivalent to the ambient background sounds outside, or similar to a modern refrigerator at between 40-55 decibels. To give a perspective, 30 decibels is the quietest sound the human ear can hear (source: RNID).
By contrast, a typical aerated system is equivalent to a coffee grinder machine (75-80 decibels).
